Family of seven loses home to fire
LA VERNIA -- A family of four adults and three children is starting over again, following a Sept. 7 blaze that destroyed their mobile home on Hickory Hill Drive. While the home was rendered a total loss, officials said no one was injured.
Coordinator Edwin Baker of the Wilson County Health and Public Safety Office, who also is the chief of the Stockdale Volunteer Fire Department, said firefighters were summoned to the home at approximately 5:30 p.m. after an electrical short circuit caused the fire that quickly spread throughout the home. The La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene, and firefighters from Stockdale and Sutherland Springs responded to assist, with units remaining in service for approximately three hours.
The San Antonio Chapter of the American Red Cross is among those who responded to assist the family of Oscar Rodriguez and Olga de la Cruz. Donations are being collected by groups including the Helping Hands Ministry. A spaghetti dinner has been planned for Saturday, Sept. 14, at Taste of Chicago on U.S. 87 in La Vernia.
