La Vernia Connections: Bus drivers get new school year off to a smooth start
By Dr. Tom Harvey
The 2013--14 school year has started successfully. Our district welcomed its students back Aug. 26. However, the entire staff has been busy this summer preparing for the new school year. The successful start of a school year should not be taken lightly. It is a huge undertaking.
I want to personally thank the staff for their preparations. This year promises to be one with many successes. When one combines the training, expertise, and dedication of a teaching staff with the eagerness, discipline, and commitment of a student body, the equation for success is set. We at LVISD also cherish the support we receive from our parents and community.
It appears that our new traffic pattern for the junior high school and high school works better every day. Changes were made to make the traffic patterns safer and more efficient. Our school continues to grow. Consequently, we continue to make adjustments to handle traffic patterns and other issues ushered in by the volume of enrollment. We appreciate the cooperation that has been demonstrated by all of our stakeholders.
I would also like to personally welcome our new staff members, parents, and students to our district. You are now part of a school community that is rich in traditions of success. We recognize that you bring ideas, energy, and enthusiasm to our organization. We look forward to working with you to make this school one of the best in our state and nation!
We all recognize the important role each staff member has in our organization. However, today, I would like to draw your attention to the role of our bus drivers. Each year, I have a tradition of visiting the transportation department at the conclusion of the first day of school. I often return several times that week to observe the final stages of the school day. School bus drivers are saints!
Can you imagine driving a bus of small children home on the first week of school? They take it slow and easy on purpose. On that day, many children actually forget where they live, forget what bus they ride, and some even fall asleep during the trip home. This year, on the first day of school, our last bus driver returned to the bus yard at approximately 6 p.m. As you recall, we experienced rain as we were dismissing the primary and intermediate students. Undeterred, this group of professionals ushered hundreds of children home and in a timely manner. Each day, the students become more confident in where their bus stop is located and they begin to understand the sequence of stops. And, the driver becomes keenly aware of where the students live. So, the routes become smoother each day with minutes taken off the route daily.
I am truly honored to be on the same team as our drivers. If given the opportunity, would you please join me in expressing your appreciation for this department? They deserve our respect and appreciation.
In closing, let me again thank each of you for your support of our school district. It is greatly appreciated.
Dr. Tom Harvey is the superintendent of the La Vernia Independent School District.
