By Fred Ohnesorge

Anchor -- “... a person or thing that can be relied on for support, stability, or security ...” -- one of several definitions for the word anchor.

When one looks out over the political and social landscape in America today, what you see is mindboggling. When you read a newspaper, go online, or turn on the TV, most times you inevitably wind up shaking your head, sometimes even your fist. There is less and less black and white and more gray, more rationalization, more exceptions to the rules.

You can debate when all this began, you can go back in time and attempt to find the cause. Where did the wheels come off the track, who dropped the ball, and how did we get here? Why waste the energy; we are here. The choice we now have before us is to fix what is broken, or accept the inevitable ending in this real-life reality show.

But, maybe that’s the wrong view. Maybe to some we are headed in the right direction. Change is good, remember? For too long we as a people have been too straight-laced and rigid. Too static, we need to be more flexible, there are no absolute truths, go with the flow.

But even the most liberal political-minded person has to see something is outta kilter here. Being from the country, you don’t have to see the dead rat in the barn to know he’s dead, you can smell him. The social fabric in America is stretched about as far as it can go. America is in desperate need of a leader who can bring us some sense of moral clarity.

I am not speaking about religion; that is up to each his own. But a simple decision to do the right thing at a national level. America’s next big political star will reflect this vision. Americans are waiting for someone to show them that we can again be a country known for its sense of doing the right thing regardless of circumstance or consequence, not for trying to define the word “is.” The dam is bursting with half-truths, equivocation, and justifications for bad acts. The next great leader of this country will re-energize America and never again will a Russian leader feel emboldened to lecture America about being “exceptional.”

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and I may be proven wrong. This is only my opinion. But ask yourself as you talk with your neighbors, co-workers, and family members. Aren’t the concerns all similar? Our society is becoming less welcoming and more close-circled. Remember the days when “looking out for your neighbor” meant trying to help somebody and not worrying about them breaking into your house? Rome is burning. Who will bring America out of the wilderness? Who is the next great American leader who galvanizes the country? Where is he/she? Read the paper, surf the Internet, watch some TV, be informed. Perhaps look around your own dinner table. The answer is out there, somewhere.

Until we find the answer, America is adrift, in search of an anchor.

Fred Ohnesorge is a business owner and resident of Floresville.
