Allen Arthur Achterberg, 50, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, in the Baylor University Hospital in Dallas after an extended illness. He was born on March 6, 1963, in Seguin, Texas, to Joyce Barbara (Koenig) and Herbert Gus Achterberg.

Allen graduated from Southwest Texas State (now Texas State University) in 1986 and spent the next 25 years teaching. He was most recently employed by the Dallas Independent School District and was the DISD Teacher of the Year in 2007.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Allen is survived by his sister, Katherine Ruth Achterberg; brothers Robert Lee Achterberg and David Anton Achterberg; nieces Elaine Rose Pereira and husband Wesley and Barbara Lynn Achterberg and partner Carl; nephew Robert “Robbie” Lee Achterberg Jr.; great-nieces Lesley and Lilly; great-nephews Christian and Robbie; and cousins Kenneth Hacker and wife Robin, Douglas Hacker, and Carolyn Agado and husband John.

The family wishes to acknowledge the friendship, support, and assistance provided by his extended Dallas family over the course of his lifetime, and by the doctors and staff of the Baylor University Hospital in Dallas over the past few weeks.

Visitation was held on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 1-4 p.m. in the Goetz Memorial Chapel in Seguin.

Interment followed in the Achterberg Cemetery near Olmos.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
