1950-2013

LaNell Marie (Schumaker) Matthews of Poth, Texas, was born June 12, 1950, and passed away Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013, at the “too soon” age of 63.

LaNell is survived by her husband, John Edward Matthews; her son, James Everett Matthews and wife Beverly; her daughter, Shannon Pape; her stepdaughter, Ione Matthews; her grandchildren, BK and wife Amber, Matthew, and Jaymie; her great-grandchildren, Chloe, Alice, and Trey; her brother, Charles Schumaker and wife Carla; and her nephews, Douglas and Donald Fine and their wives.

LaNell graduated from Edison High School in San Antonio, and also achieved an associate degree from San Antonio College. She was a lady, but strong-willed and strong-minded, who excelled in every endeavor and adventure she chose to pursue. She was also a fantastic wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, business woman, and secretary. She also served as the first female mayor of Poth, city manager of Poteet, and manager of Maverick Golf Course Pro Shop and human resources.

LaNell worked, traveled, and hunted, fished, cooked, played golf, gardened, and loved all diligently with a genuine enthusiasm and appreciation for each one she touched in her life. Her intelligence and “down-to-earthness” was broadened by her open mind and heart. LaNell’s passing will always leave a void in our lives, her family said.

Her family and friends will celebrate her beautiful life with a memorial service Wednesday, Sept. 18, at the River Bend Golf Club at Floresville. The tee time is 9 a.m.

A private interment will follow in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio

It is with great sadness we say goodbye to LaNell, but we know she is free from the horrible pain of breast cancer, her family said.

Her family members are thankful for all who touched her life, and they are all blessed by LaNell having touched their lives.

May God bless and hold each of you in the palm of His hand.
