Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Schindler Dirks passed away in her home in St. Hedwig, surrounded by her family, who meant the world to her, on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at the age of 86. She was born in San Antonio, Texas, to Fred and Annie (Beck) Schindler on July 8, 1927.

Betty attended St. Mary’s High School. She worked at the San Antonio Drug Co. and later met and married Edgar Dirks on April 3, 1948. She dedicated her life to raising her seven children and enjoyed feeding her wild birds, the fish in her ponds, and gardening. Always serving others selflessly, she did keep God first. She was the heart behind the Little Olde Ladies Baseball Team as well as the first baseman. Betty was a member of the Rosary Society and choir at the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in St. Hedwig and spent her much-deserved free time teaching the grandchildren to fish, play games, bake cookies, and have the best Christmas Eve gatherings ever.

We will always cherish and love our memories of her. “See you when we get home,” said her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Rosemary Beck; brothers Edwin Schindler and Albert Schindler; and grandson Mark Nichols.

Betty is survived by her husband of 65 years, Edgar A. Dirks; children Ronnie Dirks and wife Missy, Wayne Dirks and wife Cindy, Danny Dirks and wife Mary Ann, Greg Dirks, Doug Dirks and wife Jade, Mary Ann Nichols and husband Rick, and Glenn Dirks; sister Bernice Masch and husband Frank; brother Fred Schindler Jr. and wife Lois; 13 amazing grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and her beloved dogs.

Visitation was held on Monday, Sept. 16, from 5-8 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in La Vernia.

A funeral Mass was held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in St. Hedwig officiated by the Rev. Bill Zadora.

Entombment followed in the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Cemetery in St. Hedwig.

Memorial contributions may be made to Boysville Inc., P.O. Box 369, Converse, TX 78109.
