La Vernia ISD trustees change meeting schedule
LA VERNIA -- The La Vernia Independent School District (ISD) board of trustees has approved changing its regular meeting schedule.
Discussions Sept. 9 during a regular meeting and during a public hearing Aug. 27 prompted the board to change its regular meeting to the first Monday of each month. Until now, the meetings were scheduled on the third Monday.
Former school board member John Bilicek addressed the board on this issue.
Bilicek said he felt the decision was being made to accommodate board President Cody Miller, who also is a principal at Rayburn Elementary School in San Antonio.
He added that he hoped the board would table the decision until its next meeting.
However, the trustees approved the change 5-0, with Miller abstaining.
In other business, Sam Young, an English teacher for the district, spoke to the school board during the athletic report. Young and Athletic Director Bo Robinson are exploring the possibility of adding a soccer program to the district.
Young discussed the participation in the five soccer camps the school has held since last summer.
Also approved by the trustees were:
•A donation of $11,000 from two former students and local businesses for an inflatable run-through to be used for any organization throughout the school district.
•The creation of an additional special education aide position.
In attendance: Board President Cody Miller; trustees Janice Gimbel, Kimi Kravitz, James Barnett, Janette Chall, and Susan Reinhard; Superintendent Tom Harvey; Superintendent’s Secretary Kristen Beaver; Assistant Superintendent Diane Fisher.
