Industrial Park continues growth
STOCKDALE -- Activity within Stockdale’s Industrial Park is buzzing. As paving of West Wheeler Street nears completion, the Stockdale Economic Development Corp. (SEDC) has received word that the Texas Railroad Commission is scheduled to close six to nine oil wells in the park that were abandoned in the 1970s or early ’80s. Closure should happen next month.
Stockdale City Manager Banks Akin told the SEDC directors Sept. 10 during their regular meeting that West Wheeler Street is 99 percent complete. He said street signs, including 14 to 15 stop signs, soon would be placed. The posted speed limit will be 25 mph.
SEDC President Frank Bain Jr. welcomed the news about the closure of the abandoned wells, including one well located on the grounds of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The SEDC has been seeking to close the wells for years, and has included this project as one of its main objectives. Akin said it took more than three years to get to this stage. The state has funding available for this, he said, and added such closures are at least six months behind, due to the Eagle Ford shale oil and gas exploration.
While the closing of the wells will assist in marketing the acreage, another issue hampering marketing efforts is undeveloped land in the park that is mainly brush.
The directors selected Cedar Eaters’ bid of $10,500 to clear 12 acres within the industrial park. The targeted area is behind the cul-de-sac to Stockdale Truck Service.
In other business, the directors discussed producing better plat maps to present to potential tenants.
The directors also:
•Discussed a lease agreement between the SEDC and Fox Chapel Oil Field Services, tenants within the industrial park.
•Heard a report about a pre-construction meeting for the Fox Chapel building that was set for Sept. 11. Construction was set to begin Sept. 16.
•Heard a presentation from Director Ginger Coleman regarding the recycling program provided by Progressive Waste Solutions, located near the Stockdale Elementary School campus.
•Approved the SEDC’s 2013-14 fiscal budget. Projected income is listed at $335,000, with expenses at $93,900, and projected cash flow for the fiscal year at $241,100. Bain will present the budget to the city council in the near future.
In attendance: Sept. 10 Stockdale EDC meeting, Directors Frank Bain Jr., Gary West, Polly Stryker, L.H. West, J.C. Hrubetz, Ginger Coleman, and Roger Armstrong, and Stockdale City Manager Banks Akin.
