Nixon-Smiley 28

Yorktown 12

YORKTOWN -- The Wildcats may have scored first and last while hosting Nixon-Smiley in Yorktown last Friday evening, but between those two scores, it was all Mustangs, as Nixon-Smiley rolled to a 28-12 victory.

Nixon-Smiley was 1-1 heading into the contest, and wanted a big win ahead of its bye week and start of district play. Things didn’t start off as planned, though, as Yorktown struck first in the first quarter to take a 6-0 lead.

Things stayed about the same in the second, but the Mustangs got rolling just before halftime and capped off a solid drive with a 6-yard touchdown run from Jared Van Auken. Eduardo Tovar then booted the extra point, and Nixon-Smiley led Yorktown 7-6 at the break.

In the second half, the Mustangs picked right up where they left off, and scored early in the third with a 50-yard passing strike from Nick Pena to Garrett Earlywine. Tovar added the extra point, and the lead was 14-6 with 8:23 to play in the third. Less than a minute later, the defense helped the Nixon-Smiley effort as Tristan Newman recovered a Yorktown fumble and returned it 46 yards for a score. Tack on the extra point from Tovar, and the Mustangs led 21-6 with 7:44 remaining in the third.

The Mustangs had a good lead, but weren’t quite finished in the third. After a good defensive stand, the Nixon-Smiley offense went back to work and Van Auken carried the load. He managed to find a hole in the Wildcat defense and scampered 79 yards for the touchdown. One final Tovar extra point, and the score stood at 28-6 with 4:38 left to play in the third.

Things settled a bit from there and the third ended with the same score. Yorktown got back into the end zone early in the fourth on a 7-yard touchdown run, but failed once again on the conversion. The Mustangs kept the ball on the ground to help chew up clock from there, and eventually locked up the 28-12 victory.

In total, the Mustangs posted just over 300 yards of offense, with 224 rushing yards on 38 carries, and 85 passing yards on two completions.

Van Auken was the Mustangs’ workhorse on the night, carrying the ball 24 times for 200 yards and two touchdowns. Tom Palacio added another 25 yards on eight touches. Pena was 2 of 3 passing the ball, and Earlywine reeled in both tosses for 85 yards and the touchdown.

On the defensive side of things, Michael Scarbrough and Logan McMain led the way with eight tackles apiece, followed by Earlywine and Van Auken with seven each, and Sam Moore and Justin Ramos each with six tackles. Newman had the fumble recovery for a touchdown and Moore also scooped up a loose Yorktown ball. Earlywine had two interceptions on the night, meaning he caught just as many passes from the Yorktown quarterback as he did from his own.

With the win, the Mustangs improve to 2-1 on the year. The team will now enjoy a bye week before beginning district play Friday, Sept. 27, with a trip to Karnes City to face the 1-2 Badgers. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
