LA VERNIA -- The La Vernia Bear football team succeeded Sept. 13 in gaining another victory at home against the Canyon Lake Hawks.

Justus Parker gave the Bears their first points of the game with a blocked punt return for a 5-yard touchdown with 9:54 remaining in the first.

Senior Levi Andrews put the Bears on the scoreboard for a second time with a run of 37 yards.

The Bears’ offense dominated the first quarter of the game with the only points on the board. At the end of the first quarter, the Bears led 12-0.

Andrews made a second punt return touchdown with a 75-yard run with 7:12 remaining in the half. Kyle Douglas made the extra-point kick.

Canyon Lake earned its first score of the game at the end of the second quarter with a 6-yard run by McGuire Johnson. Mike Thorpe kicked the extra point. The score stood 19-7 at the half.

The third quarter proved tough for both the Bears and Hawks, with neither scoring. The Hawks had majority control of the ball, using all 12 minutes of the quarter for a touchdown attempt.

Canyon Lake scored its second and final touchdown of the game with 9:20 remaining in the fourth. Hayden DuBois made the 1-yard carry. Thorpe made the extra point.

The Bears scored a fourth touchdown when Andrews made a 75-yard kickoff return with 9:20 remaining. The 2-point conversion was good with a handoff from Colby Skelton to Nick Simpson.

Vince Gill produced the last points of the game with a run for 2 yards in the last minute of the game. Douglas kicked the extra point.

Each team lost a total of 40 yards in penalties, though Canyon Lake garnered five flags.

Canyon Lake was only able to make three pass attempts, completing none, while the Bears completed three passes for 20 yards. The Bears also came up with a fumble recovery, while the Hawks made an interception.

The Hawks did succeed in outrushing the Bears, with 257 yards gained in 58 attempts. The Bears managed 160 yards in 24 attempts. Andrews led the ground game with 37 yards on one carry. Gill also ran 91 yards on 15 carries and Skelton earned 11 yards. Jevante Anderson ran 13 yards on four carries, while Landon Richter had 8 yards on two carries.

Andrews, Parker, and Simpson each caught a La Vernia pass, with a total of 18 yards receiving.

La Vernia will travel to Wimberley Friday, Sept. 20, for the fourth game of the season. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
