Beware: Ad calls are misleading
FLORESVILLE -- Area business owners are advised to use caution if approached about purchasing ads in a “2014 Wilson County Community, Visitors, and Relocation Guide.”
Recently, several local businesses have been contacted by Skyline Publishing, based in Peoria, Ill., to place ads in a “full-color, glossy magazine” the company said will be distributed through restaurants, banks, grocery stores, hotels/motels, and more. The caller’s careful phrasing leads business owners to believe the publication is a local product, affiliated with the Eagle Ford shale oil and gas exploration.
In the past, this company has solicited ads from local businesses and implied a local connection; this was not the case, however.
Skyline Publishing deals in producing local maps and relocation guides, according to its website.
Local organizations, such as the Floresville Chamber of Commerce, produce visitors guides. Call the chamber at 830-393-0074 to inquire about this publication. A locally produced Eagle Ford Directory is published twice each year by the Wilson County News; other directories and guides also are available for local businesses and organizations to highlight their products and services.
If you think you are a victim of advertising fraud, contact the Texas attorney general’s office at http://www.oag.state.tx.us or the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office at 830-393-2535.
