Join local events to ‘take a bite out of crime’
National Night Out will be celebrated Tuesday, Oct. 1, across Texas. Area communities will host a variety of events to encourage neighbors to meet and get to know each other, and for community members to meet members of their law-enforcement and emergency services providers.
National Night Out aims to strengthen communities and encourages neighbors to build stronger relationships with each other and their safety and law-enforcement communities. In its 30th year, this event is observed in August across most of the country, and in October -- for cooler weather -- in Texas. Last year’s National Night Out involved more than 37.5 million people in more than 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide.
Enjoy getting to know your neighbors by participating in your local event.
China Grove: Join the community at China Grove Fire and Rescue, 2456 F.M. 1516 S., from 6-9 p.m. for face-painting, a balloon artist, moon bounce, and more.
Elmendorf: Meet neighbors in the Elemendorf City Park on Old Corpus Christi Road from 6-8 p.m. for family entertainment.
Floresville: Visit the Floresville Event Center on S.H. 97 from 4-8 p.m. to meet representatives of the Floresville police and fire departments, see EMS vehicles, and enjoy a moon bounce, meet members of the Floresville High School dance team and mascots, along with super hero characters. The event will include a DWI simulator, fingerprinting, and demos by the Floresville Police Department’s bike patrol and K-9 unit.
La Vernia: Members of the La Vernia Police Department, La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department (VFD), and the city of La Vernia invite everyone to the City Park from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for free hot dogs and chips. Information on crime prevention, fire safety, and more will be offered. Meet mascots, such as Sparky the Fire Dog and McGruff the Crime Dog.
Nixon and Stockdale: The Union Valley Baptist Church Fellowship Hall at 8221 F.M. 1681 is the focal point for this gathering. Visit with neighbors and enjoy finger foods, cold drinks, and desserts. Representatives of the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office and first- responders also may be present. Kids can enjoy face painting, bike safety, movies, and popcorn.
St. Hedwig: The community event is in the St. Hedwig City Park on F.M. 1346 next to City Hall from 6-9 p.m. Meet members of the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office and constables, St. Hedwig VFD, and Acadian Ambulance, along with representatives of Methodist AirCare, San Antonio Air Life, and the Texas Forestry Service.
