Judson 49
East Central 7

EAST CENTRAL -- The Hornets scored first during their game with Judson last Friday night, but in the end, the Rockets were just too much for East Central, as the home team fell 49-7.

East Central struck first early in the first quarter as senior quarterback Jeremy Jones ran in from a yard out. Dennis Chavez booted the extra point, and the Hornets celebrated a 7-0 lead with 8:45 still left to play in the first quarter.

Judson wasted little time on its next possession, taking just 23 seconds off the clock before quarterback RayJohn Austin-Ramsey connected with Andrew Wilson for 35 yards and the score. Jo’Von Kyle ran in the 2-point conversion, and Judson took an 8-7 lead.

Austin-Ramsey and Wilson connected twice more in the first half for a pair of Rocket touchdowns, and Austin-Ramsey hit Nicholas Ortiz for 62 yards and a fourth passing touchdown for Judson. Brandon Sanders ran in an 8-yard touchdown for the Rockets with 6:11 still remaining in the first half, and Austin-Ramsey hit Cedric Williams for 5 yards and a touchdown with 10 seconds remaining on the first-quarter clock. As the teams went into the locker rooms for halftime, it was Judson in clear control of the game, 43-7.

Things slowed down in the third, but Judson remained in control of the game on both sides of the ball. The Rockets added a pair of field goals in the third quarter to extend their lead to 49-7, as the Hornets were shut out in the second half.

East Central’s potent offense struggled against the Rocket defense, earning just 254 total yards. Jones completed just 7 of 19 passing attempts and threw two interceptions, though he did tally 140 yards and ran in the Hornets’ lone touchdown. Wanya Ward caught four passes for 82 yards, Javion Polk caught two balls for 56 yards, and Johnathan Jackson caught one for 2 paces.

On the ground, East Central ran the ball 49 times for 114 yards. The Hornets fumbled three times, losing two of them to Judson. Polk was the leading rusher with 39 yards on 11 carries, followed by Jones with 38 steps on 15 runs. Jackson ran the ball 16 times for 20 yards, and Roy Mora had seven carries for 17 yards.

The typically stingy Hornet defense was off its game, allowing 520 yards to Judson. The Rockets ran for 202 yards and one touchdown, and threw for another 318 yards and five touchdowns.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 2-2 on the season. East Central will travel to New Braunfels this Friday, and will then enjoy a bye week to start October. The Hornets will resume play on Friday, Oct. 11, as the team hosts Corpus Christi Carroll to begin district play.
