La Vernia Bears use running game to power past Wimberley
La Vernia 31
WIMBERLEY -- No matter the sport, it always seems to be a heated, highly anticipated meeting when La Vernia and Wimberley get together, and last Friday was no exception, as the Bears made the trip north to play the Texans at home. Wimberley struck first, but in the end, it was La Vernia that skipped town with the victory.
The Texans drew first blood about four minutes into the game, as running back Sam Drew scampered 15 yards for the touchdown. The extra point was good to make it a 7-0 game, and the Bear offense went to work. La Vernia wasted no time, however, and pulled to within a point as Vince Gill covered half the field for a 46-yard touchdown run. Landon Richter then ran in a 2-point conversion, and the Bears led 8-7 just 34 seconds after the Texan touchdown. A quick defensive stand by La Vernia put the offense right back on the field, and Levi Andrews ran in from 17 yards out. With 3:36 left to play in the first, the Bears were on top, 14-7.
Wimberley put together a good drive to close out the first quarter, and scored on a 32-yard field goal. As the second quarter neared its end, Kyle Douglass gave the Bears a field goal of their own from 35 yards out, making it a 17-10 game. The Texans worked their two-minute drill to perfection, though, and scored on a 4-yard touchdown pass with 14 seconds to play in the half. The point-after attempt was no good, and the score stood at 17-16 in favor of La Vernia at the half.
The Bears got their offense cranked back up in the third quarter, and quarterback Colby Skelton capped off a La Vernia drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. Douglas kicked the extra point to make the score 24-16. A few minutes later, Skelton scored again for La Vernia, this time on a 33-yard run from scrimmage. Douglas added the point-after kick to make the game’s final score 31-16.
The Bear offense got things done on the ground, as Gill led the way with 123 yards on 12 carries. Jevante Anderson had 10 carries for 90 yards, and Skelton added 74 on 13 official carries. Richter and Andrews each picked up 22 yards on the ground.
Skelton threw just two passes during the game, but completed both for 37 yards. Gill caught one for 8 paces, and Justus Parker pulled down the other for 29 yards.
Defensively, the Bears played great, holding Texan quarterback Colton Cerday to just 17 of 42 passing for 152 yards, while intercepting him once. The Texan ground game picked up less than 200 yards.
The win lifts the Bears to 3-1 on the year. La Vernia will be back at home this Friday to face the Bandera Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are another team that likes to pass the ball, often attempting just as many passes as rushes. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Bear Stadium.
