Editor:

With the advent of the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), we are seeing more and more of the bad side of us human beings. It is disturbing to see that our Texas is one of the leaders in what would have to be called mean-spirited attempts to derail a program that significantly brings down the uninsured numbers and brings us closer to other economically advanced countries that guarantee health coverage. (A program that meets a long-ignored need.)

What else can you call the refusal to cooperate in any form in implementing a law that has been duly passed by the Congress and declared constitutional by the Supreme Court? Further, refusing to assist, officially, in providing information on how it works or cooperating with those who do?

On the contrary, we’re adding to a difficult situation with misinformation. Sen. Cruz was quoted just yesterday [Sept. 24] as saying on the Senate floor: “I rise today to speak from 26 million Texans and 300 million Americans.”

How can that be? Obama won the last election and the ACA was already on the books! Also officially, Cruz can only speak for Texans. And I doubt that all 26 million are in accord with him. Also, we are opting out of a program that expands Medicaid coverage for some who may have difficulty finding program coverage otherwise and are in dire need of this. The bottom line harshness, though, is the politically charged blitz-type efforts to defund the program at any cost.

What is also bad about these actions is that the majority of the opponents profess to be Christians. How can they reconcile such actions with their supposed beliefs? Clearly, for those that believe, to be Christian is not simply to profess such faith but to live accordingly through our acts. In fact, love one another is the identifying mark of true Christians (John 13:35). Jesus also said, “... what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me” (Matthew 25:45). In practical terms, to be a Christian is to help those less fortunate. Isn’t this what this is all about?

Is it a well-thought or well-developed program? I doubt it. How can it be when it was hammered out, so to speak, in a politically charged, highly partisan, and hostile environment? But, it’s what we have. Let’s work together on making it better. Let’s not “throw out the baby with the bathwater.”
