1931-2013

Leroy George Schneider was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a lifelong resident of Wilson County, and entered eternal rest Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, in his residence at the age of 82 years, 2 months, and 1 day. Leroy was born July 19, 1931, in Floresville, Texas, the son of John and Hattie Real Schneider.

He grew up in McCoy and went on horseback to attend Kasper Country School. Leroy was in the first class of students to be bused to Poth schools, where he graduated from Poth High School. Leroy then received his bachelor’s degree from Texas A&I University in Kingsville, and his master’s degree from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos. Leroy proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War, serving in France with the Army Corps of Engineers. He was a lifelong educator, teacher, coach, driving instructor, and bus driver with the Poth ISD for 34 years, retiring in 1989. After retiring, Leroy served as justice of the peace and loved managing his farm and cattle. Leroy married Julia Dzuik on June 22, 1957, in St. Ann Catholic Church in Kosciusko. Leroy served two terms as Grand Knight with the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2618 in Poth, was a member of the Poth VFW No. 8555, and was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Church, serving many years as lector and usher. Leroy was an honest man with a beautiful sense of humor who worked hard and loved life.

Leroy was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister and brother-in-law, Ruby and Alvin Matheaus.

He is survived by his loving wife of more than 56 years, Julia Dzuik Schneider of Poth; his children, Diana Reyne Griffin and husband Frank of Canyon, Jeanette Marie Masso and husband Sammy of Ovilla, Roger Wayne Schneider and wife Rebecca of San Antonio, and Anthony “Tony” John Schneider and wife Sharon of Buda; his grandchildren, Sarah Petronio and husband Daniel, John Griffin, Mark Griffin, Benjamin Masso, Jacob Masso, Audrey Schneider, Jonathon Schneider, Luke Schneider, and Ryan Schneider; and his great-granddaughter, Avery Griffin.

Visitation was held on Monday, Sept. 23, from 4-6 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Poth, with a recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Poth.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the church officiated by the Rev. Grzegorz Szewczyk.

Interment followed in the Blessed Sacrament Cemetery in Poth.

Serving as pallbearers were Alan Jaskinia, David Gawlik, George Dzuik, John Lerette, Terry Gawlik, and Daniel Petronio.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Poth, or the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2618 in Poth.
