Wet road likely factor in three simultaneous crashes
LA VERNIA -- The investigation continues into three separate but nearly simultaneous crashes that occurred on a stretch of F.M. 775 during rainy weather Sept. 19. None of the drivers involved was injured, officials said.
Sgt. J. Ryan Christian of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Highway Patrol said that at approximately 7:23 p.m., 17-year-old Trent Preston of La Vernia was traveling northbound on F.M. 775 when he came upon stopped traffic. The preliminary investigation revealed that Preston applied the brakes, which caused his 2003 Ford F-series pickup truck to skid on wet pavement. This caused the truck to leave the roadway and subsequently overturn.
Ethan Dennis, 16, of Adkins was driving past the scene in a 1968 Ford Mustang. When Dennis applied the brakes, his vehicle went into a side skid, and was struck by an oncoming 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by 60-year-old Mary Mainz of La Vernia.
Michael Varner, 18, of Adkins, driving a 2007 Dodge pickup truck, was attempting to slow down for the stopped traffic, Christian said. His vehicle was struck in the rear by a 2005 Ford pickup truck driven by 16-year-old Tristan Gardner of La Vernia.
No charges have been filed, as investigations into each crash are ongoing, Christian said.
