Deputies catch breaks in old burglary investigations
Deputies from the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office are making progress in several old burglary investigations, according to Sheriff’s Investigator Roland Treviño. At least one suspect is in custody, while arrest warrants will be issued for others.
Louis Lerma, 38, of San Antonio recently was arrested in Bexar County by members of the U.S. Marshal Service’s Lone Star Fugitive Task Force. He is charged with burglary of a habitation in connection with an incident that was reported July 29. Fingerprints collected at the scene of a break-in on C.R. 305 east of Floresville matched Lerma’s, Treviño said. He also is charged with committing a Sept. 1 burglary on C.R. 304 and could face additional charges.
Rey Gonzales Sr., 47, of Saspamco will have a warrant issued for his arrest, Treviño said, in connection with a June 16, 2010, burglary on U.S. 181 near the Bexar County line. A television and a dog were stolen from the home, with Gonzales later being given a reward for returning the dog.
Treviño said the victim recently called to report that she found the serial number to the television, which the investigator located. Further investigation by deputies led Gonzales to allegedly confess to the crime.
Serial numbers also helped deputies to recover various items stolen during an Aug. 6 burglary of a home on Lost Trail near La Vernia. According to a report by former Deputy Elias Guzman, the homeowner reported that firearms, samurai swords, cameras, guitars, and a laptop computer were stolen from the home. The investigation has led deputies to issue an arrest warrant for a suspect from Karnes County, Treviño said.
Warrants also will be issued for three La Vernia- area men in connection with a Sept. 8 burglary of a home on S.H. 119 near Stockdale. During the incident, various mounted taxidermy animals were stolen, according to a report by Deputy Travis Beck. An informant led deputies to find many of the items, which were damaged.
Deputies continue to search for clues in a March 13 burglary of a home on Hickory Circle north of Floresville. Deputy Blake Brieden reported that various weapons were stolen from the home. A Savage rifle and an SKS rifle matching the descriptions of some of the stolen weapons were traced to two San Antonio pawnshops and eventually were recovered.
Investigations into these and other burglary cases are ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office at 830-393-2535.
