POTH -- The Poth Pirate football team opened the 2013 District 15-2A DII season with a dominating 39-6 victory over the Bloomington Bobcats last Friday night.
The Pirates, who improved to 2-2 with the win, took little time to begin the onslaught, as junior quarterback Thomas Krawietz capped off the first two offensive possessions with touchdown runs of 41 and 45 yards, respectively.
With outstanding blocking from the offensive line, the Pirate running game amassed 442 rushing yards on 43 attempts. Krawietz collected his third rushing touchdown from 1 yard out early in the second quarter, and then accounted for another score just before halftime when he connected with senior Jerrek Hosek for a 14-yard touchdown pass and catch.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Pirates were just as impressive, and were led by juniors John Waclawczyk and Marcos Guevara. The Bloomington Bobcats were held to one first down and only 42 yards in the first half of play.
Bloomington had little more success in the second half, although they were able to get on the scoreboard in the third quarter when senior Chris Cabrera found the end zone on a 9-yard touchdown run.
Poth added two more scores in the third quarter. The first came from junior Sean Clancy, who showed speed and quickness as he eluded and outran defenders for a 49-yard touchdown run. Fellow junior Koby Pruski powered his way into the end zone from 2 yards out to cap off the impressive offensive performance.
This week the Pirates will travel to Cotulla to continue the quest for a spot in the playoffs, as they take on the 1-3 Cowboys. Cotulla logged its first win of the year last week in its district-opening win over Natalia, 35-0.
