POTH -- Every time Poth and Stockdale get together, a playoff-like atmosphere is created. It was no different on Sept. 24, as the Poth Pirette volleyball team traveled to Stockdale to take on the Lady Brahmas in the first of two scheduled District 28-2A matches.

In the first game of the night, the teams were close throughout the first 10 points, but Poth then began to pull away. The Pirettes opened up a 10-5 lead, and later held a 15-6 advantage. Stockdale rallied back for several points, but Poth maintained its lead at 20-13, and a little tip over the net by Pirette senior Devon Dylla gave the game one win to Poth by the final score of 25-16.

The Pirettes won the first 2 points of the second game before Stockdale broke serve, but then Poth got it right back and quickly opened up a 5-1 lead. Keana Savage of Stockdale unleashed a vicious kill to give the serve to the Lady Brahmas, but it immediately went back to Poth. The Pirettes led 10-5, and then 15-8 at the midway point.

Several service errors by both teams moved the ball back and forth, but the Pirettes remained in control on the scoreboard. Poth led 20-10 at one point, and eventually put the second game away with a 25-13 victory.

In game No. 3, things got a little more interesting. The Stockdale football team had gotten out of practice, and the influx of students helped energize the Lady Brahmas’ home crowd.

The Pirettes started the game with 3 straight points, but Savage picked up a couple of big points for Stockdale to keep the Lady Brahmas in the game. Poth got onto a short run and opened up an 8-2 lead, but a Pirette service error and Savage kill put Stockdale back in the hunt.

Poth eventually led 10-4, and then 15-10. The Lady Brahmas closed things a little to make it 15-12, but the Pirettes caught a little run and led by the score of 20-13 when Stockdale Head Coach Katy Wiatrek called a timeout.

The Pirettes won the next point to make it a 21-13 game, and the next to make it 22-13. Stockdale’s Jillian Jeane had a big kill to break serve, but a Stockdale service error made it a 23-14 game, and things looked to be all but over.

A Poth service error made it a 23-15 game, though, and the serve went back over to Stockdale. The Pirettes won the next point to make it 24-15, but then gave the ball right back to Stockdale with yet another service error. The score was now 24-16.

Vanessa Urrabazo came in to serve for the Lady Brahmas, and the crowd erupted as Stockdale scored 4 straight points to make it a 24-20 game. Poth Head Coach Patti Zenner was forced to call a timeout to get her girls settled down. The move by Zenner worked perfectly, and the Pirettes won the next point with a kill from Shelby Yanta. It was an exciting finish, as Poth won by the final score of 25-20.

The match win lifted the Pirettes to 3-1 in district play, while Stockdale fell to 1-3. The Pirettes finished out the week with a loss at Antonian in a non-district matchup, and the Lady Brahmas blew past Luling last Friday evening. The Pirettes and Lady Brahmas will meet again on Friday, Oct. 11, in Poth.
