FFA launches magazine app
FRANKLIN, Tenn. ---- Journal Communications and the National FFA Organization announce the launch of the updated FFA New Horizons free magazine app for Apple, Android, and Kindle Fire devices, according to an August Journal Communications press release.
The update features content from the fall 2013 edition of FFA New Horizons magazine, including a historical retrospective of the official FFA jacket and profiles of national FFA student leaders and agriculture educators, as well as career advice and tips for personal growth.
This latest update has been enhanced with additional technical features, such as a magazine cover with embedded video, vertical and horizontal orientation, and scrolling text for readability. The magazine’s editorial and digital technology teams worked together to ensure that the enhancements complement the magazine’s editorial content rather than overpower it.
“It was important to us that we didn’t add bells and whistles for the sake of bells and whistles,” said FFA New Horizons Editor Kim Newsom Holmberg. “We want the app to strengthen the relationship our readers have with the magazine by enhancing their experience with the content.”
Holmberg points to an article featuring the annual Alabama FFA Association String Band Competition, which is accompanied by a photo slideshow and video of the event with interviews of the competitors. Previous app updates have included interactive quizzes and embedded audio files. The app is updated quarterly with new content.
“Our main goal is to deliver the best experience to our audience,” Holmberg said. “We’ll continue to research the market and solicit feedback from our readers, who, at 15-21 years of age, are very technologically savvy.”
FFA New Horizons magazine is the member publication for the National FFA Organization. The magazine is published by Journal Communications and delivered quarterly to more than 500,000 student members, agriculture educators, alumni, and FFA supporters.
