Workers suffer burns at oil-rig site
FALLS CITY -- Six workers are recovering from burns suffered when a steam pipe burst Sept. 24 at an oil rig site operated by Freeport-McMoRan Oil and Gas on C.R. 207 west of here. The site is located just off F.M. 791.
Karnes County Emer-gency Medical Services was dispatched to the scene after the incident occurred at approximately 10:47 a.m., according to Karnes County Sheriff Dwayne Villanueva. Details remain sketchy, but the sheriff said four of the workers had suffered second- and third-degree burns. They were airlifted to the San Antonio Military Medical Center, while two other workers who suffered less severe injuries were transported via personal vehicles to unknown hospitals.
Freeport-McMoRan spokesman Eric Kinneberg said following the incident that none of his company’s workers was among the injured. They instead were employed by Berry Brothers General Contractors Inc. and Sprint Safety.
Berry Brothers’ Risk Manager Lloyd Aucoin said three of the workers were employed by his company. He would not divulge further information, but confirmed that an investigation being led by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is ongoing. Telephone calls and email messages from the Wilson County News to Sprint Safety spokesman Keith Dillard were not answered.
Texas Railroad Com-mission spokesman Ramona Nye said that her agency conducted a lease inspection of the site Sept. 25 and concluded that the lease was in compliance with the commission’s oil and gas division rules.
