Goober Gazette: Lions have new peanut brittle category for annual contest

The Floresville Lions Club Peanut Brittle Contest is experiencing some changes this year. To spice things up, a new category has been added, “Peanut Brittle Specialties,” to include ingredients such as chocolate, coconut, jalapeno, or any other exotic ingredient. There will be just one first-place trophy for that category. Other trophies awarded will be for first, second, third, and honorable mention.

Another change is the location of the judging. Due to the congestion downtown on Peanut Festival Saturday, peanut brittle entries will be accepted at Jack’s Cafe at 507 10th St. Entries must be in a clear, one-gallon container and can be dropped off either Friday evening on Oct. 11 or on Saturday morning, Oct. 12, before 9:30 a.m. The judging will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Lions Club meeting room and the winners will be posted that afternoon in front of the Jailhouse Museum downtown on the courthouse square. Trophies will be delivered, and you do not need to be present to win.

Lions Club members will shortly be seeking bidders for the peanut brittle. The highest bidder will win the first-place entry, the second-highest bidder will win the second-place entry, and so on. Proceeds from this important fund-raising endeavor will go toward several Lions Club charitable activities and scholarship funds for Floresville High School seniors.

For more information, call Lion LaJuana Newnam-Leus at 830-393-2166.
