The La Vernia Independent School District (ISD) has many successful programs. Last week, the Homecoming events went well and it was great for the Bears to secure a Homecoming victory. The pageantry and music were spectacular. It was great to hear the band and see so many students participating in the events. The athletes and coaches made us all proud with their efforts and we all went home pleased with the evening.

There are other events within the district that are also very successful. We are extremely proud of these activities too. Let me be the fanfare and lights for one of these groups today. I would like to draw your attention to our outstanding agricultural science program and the students in the FFA.

Recently, the La Vernia High School Milk Quality and Products team qualified for the national contest in Louisville, Ky., which will be held Tuesday, Oct. 29, through Saturday, Nov. 2. Last school year, this team placed first at the district and area contests, as well as the state contest that took place at Tarleton State University.

This team consists of seniors Kasey Reinen and Jordan Bailey, junior Braden Recker, and sophomore Jaelyn Kotzur. At the area contest, Kasey placed first individually, Jordan placed second, and Braden placed ninth. At the state contest, Jordan placed second individually, with Kasey placing sixth and Braden placing 12th.

This is the fifth year that La Vernia has qualified for the national contest in this event, placing first at three of the national contests in previous years. The team is practicing three days a week at 6:30 a.m. before school in order to prepare for the contest.

Please join me in congratulating these students and their sponsors. Their expertise and hard work are appreciated. Quote me on this -- I am honored to be associated with them and I am extremely proud of the way they represent our school and community.

Tom Harvey is the superintendent of the La Vernia Independent School District.
