Letter: Same situation yet no solution

Editor:

How can two people (or groups) observe the exact same situation and yet interpret it in totally opposite directions? That’s precisely the madness going on in the nation’s capital right now.

It seems the vogue nowadays is for each of the political parties to blame the other for the government shutdown. The Democrats are saying the Republicans are responsible by seeking to delay, defund, and/or dismantle the Affordable Care Act at all costs.

The Republicans, on the other hand, claim the Democrats are responsible because the president and the Senate leader refuse to negotiate (read: give in to) with the House of Representatives (while they, in essence, create the situation that ends up in the shutdown). The Republicans’ position sounds much like the abusive spouse who blames the abused -- “because she/he made me mad.”

Clearly, the persistent, regardless of the consequences, fight to undo something already legally on the books and vital to the nation’s uninsured is what got us here. Shutting out the uninsured is not in the best interest of the nation and is not the act of statesmen.

Even Thomas Sowell (staunch conservative) said: “The time, effort, and credibility that Republicans are investing in trying to defund Obamacare is a high risk, low yield investment.” (Re: Obamacare consequences: High risk, low yield, Oct. 2)

Also, I wonder how many of us, if we are honest, can say that we never sought or accepted government help for which we did not personally pay? How unique that would be.
