CPS mourns fallen lineman
SAN ANTONIO -- Hector Castro, Jr., 54, a CPS Energy transmission journeyman, passed away overnight. A 31-year veteran of the utility, Castro was recovering after falling from a pole Oct. 1 during a training exercise at the company’s Eastside Service Center. He leaves a wife, a son and daughter, and grandchildren.
“Losing a CPS Energy family member is painful,” said CEO Doyle Beneby. “I had the honor of meeting Hector and his wife earlier this year, when we celebrated his 30-year anniversary with CPS Energy. I’m deeply saddened to go from celebrating his service to our community to honoring his memory. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family now.”
Training was suspended on Oct. 1 until further notice. The outcome of an investigation into the accident is pending.
On receiving word of Castro’s passing this morning, CPS Energy crews were placed on stand-down for non-emergency work. Grief counseling services are being provided to linemen company-wide.
