Stockdale enters second leg of track project
Stockdale Independent School District 2012-13 Teacher of the Year recipients include (from left) Beverly Hummel, elementary school; Joshua Heimann, high school; and Daphne Gordon, junior high school. The honorees were presented awards during the Oct. 14 school board meeting.
After a dropped baton or two, the Stockdale Independent School District (ISD) board of trustees is back on track in its effort to not only construct a track complex, but also gain a new grandstand as well.
The complex, the second project in the district’s 2010 long-term plan, received trustees’ approval Oct. 14 for a proposal from Hellas Sports Construction of Austin for construction of the track complex and a new grandstand and press box.
According to Stockdale ISD Superintendent Paul Darilek after the meeting, the track complex will cost the district $607,000, while the grandstand will cost $254,000. One of the deciding factors was the age of the bleachers and that the cost to relocate would be more than $200,000. With this route, the district will gain a new grandstand with seating for capacity of 750 to 1,000 people.
Darilek said work will commence after the last home football game, set for Nov. 8.
Funding for this project was approved during a May 13 board meeting, when the board allocated $500,000, as well as approving the issuance of $300,000 in interest-bearing time warrants. The loan will be paid back within five years.
The board also continued its pursuit of a multi-purpose building on the elementary school campus. This will provide protection from the weather for students participating in physical education activities. During the meeting, Darilek said, two proposals were considered for a 50-foot-by-80-foot building. The board is considering the structure with a 20-foot middle gable that would cost the district $35,000, according to a proposal from Alpha Building Corp. of San Antonio. Darilek said the building has not been purchased yet.
In other business, the following Stockdale ISD teachers were presented the 2012-13 Teacher of the Year award: Beverly Hummel for the elementary school; Daphne Gordon, junior high school; and Joshua Heimann, high school.
