FLORESVILLE -- According to representatives of Camino Real Community Services, the organization is running out of space here. Erwin Jaloway and Emma Garcia made a presentation during the Floresville Economic Development Corp. (FEDC) board meeting Oct. 14, in which they expressed interest in acquiring a tract in the Veterans Business Park on Paloma Drive.
Garcia said Camino Real, which provides various services to mentally ill and developmentally challenged children and adults, currently occupies four buildings throughout Floresville that house its administrative offices, sheltered workshop, mental health clinic, and an early childhood intervention center. The four account for approximately 15,000 to 20,000 square feet of space. Garcia said the goal is for the organization to occupy a single building with an estimated 30,000 square feet of area.
Jaloway said he hopes that the FEDC either would donate land to Camino Real or sell it to the organization at a discounted price. FEDC board President Andy Eubanks said the board would revisit the discussion when Camino Real presents a preliminary site plan for its proposed new facility.
Also, new Executive Director Tommy Baker, during his report, told the board that he met recently with a “serious prospect.” The firm, which at this time shall remain anonymous, intends to open a convenience store with a car wash and fuel station in fall 2014. The real estate transaction is set to close by the end of December, he said.
Baker also said he is researching potential candidates for a new attorney for the FEDC. At the board’s November meeting, he said he would present two or three “economic development” attorneys for the board’s review.
In other business, the board:
•Voted to continue negotiations with F&W Electrical Contractors related to its proposed purchase of 61.64 acres in the El Rancho Grande Industrial Park on F.M. 537.
•Voted to continue working with Bury+Partners in its preparation for roadway and drainage work at El Rancho Grande, at a cost of $49,900.
•Approved a credit card with a $1,000 spending limit for Baker.
•Approved the placement of a “For Sale” sign at the Veterans Business Park -- at a cost not to exceed $600 -- which will include a diagram of the park’s overall layout indicating which parcels remain available.
Floresville Economic Development Corp. (FEDC) meeting Oct. 14. In attendance: FEDC board members Andy Eubanks, Ray Lamberth, Jason Talley, and David Strozier; Executive Director Tommy Baker, former Interim Executive Director Raymond “Ram” Ramirez, and Floresville City Manager Henrietta Turner.
