SEGUIN -- In their final meet before the District 28-3A cross-country championships, all eight La Vernia teams were outstanding at the Navarro Panther Invitational this past Saturday at Starcke Park in Seguin.

“Our kids all performed extremely well,” said Head Coach Richard Hinojosa. “It was a great opportunity to race on what will be the course used for district. Outstanding competition included, among others, Luling, Antonian, Boerne, and Wimberley.

“We’ve been having solid workouts and we should be heavily favored to sweep the district titles,” Hinojosa added. “We need to stay healthy and focused, and keep working as a team.”

At the Navarro meet, the varsity girls finished second in the team standings, and the varsity boys were third. The junior varsity girls finished first, and the junior varsity boys were third. In eighth-grade competition, the girls finished first, while the boys were second. The same thing happened in the seventh-grade division, as the girls grabbed gold and the boys took home silver.

In varsity girls competition, Olivia Hinojosa led the Lady Bears with her fourth-place finish, followed by Bailee Vrana in sixth, and Dakota Guerrero in eighth place. Shaley Trammell finished 13th, Mayra Alvarado was 15th, Elizabeth Moczygemba was 25th, and Nena Burg was 58th overall.

On the boys side, Dillon Goan paced the Bears with his second-place finish, followed by Andrew Cribb in fourth place. Gage Brandt finished 18th, Bobby Gonzalez was 22nd, and Tate Gregory finished 23rd.

Sub-varsity results are as follows:

JV Girls: Jessica Perry-2, Erin Tuttle-5, Annie Lowak-7, Isabel De La Fuente-8, Sabrina Wolf-9, Ellie Reeder-16, Ashland Newberg-17, Samantha Miller-27, Kasandra Arteaga-41.

JV Boys: Brett Cheverton-7, Michael Leija-10, Aaron Duelm-20, Fernando Ayon-26, Cody Hertz-30, John Wedow-36, Dillon Fuller-37, Ross Gammon-38, Travis Kremis-40.

Eighth-grade Girls: Annie Dirks-5, Emily Parnell-9, Sabina Schwab-10, Misty Hartman-15, Kyla Marie Barron-16, Alexis Caldwell-29.

Eighth-grade Boys: Ryel Leija-8, Josh Krueger-12, Lee Roy Morales-16, Hunter Skryzcki-19, Zachary Gastauer-21, Jeremy Lestourgeon-23, Will Keith-26, Lewis Anderson-33.

Seventh-grade Girls: Allison Newberg-2, Alea Dews-5, Belle Skaggs-7, Courtney Ploch-8, Giselle Valero-10, Celestina Alejandro-11, Heaven Muenster-17, Madeline Williston-20, Alexis Caldwell-29.

Seventh-grade Boys: Landon Collins-7, Cameron Jordan-12, Matthew Morales-13, Ethan Royal-22, Joe Alvarado-25.

The District 28-3A Cross-Country Championships is scheduled to be held at Starcke Park in Seguin on Wednesday, Oct. 23. Varsity girls will race at 9:30 a.m., followed by varsity boys at 10 a.m. Junior varsity girls will start at 10:30, and junior varsity boys will run at 11 a.m. Junior high school girls will race at 5 p.m., and the junior high boys will run at 5:30 p.m.
