FLORESVILLE -- When Fred and Elizabeth Ohnesorge opened Acme Guns and Gear one year ago, they weren’t exactly sure how things would go. It’s been a great first year for the small shop, though, and the couple remain optimistic about future growth.
October 19 marked one year in business for Acme Guns and Gear, a shop that shares space with the couple’s other business, Acme Gold Buyers. Things have been quite busy, and Fred acknowledged that the first year has certainly been better than he anticipated.
The shop has a good mix of in-stock firearms, and customers have many more options from which to choose. Considering the number of firearms on the shelf a year ago, Fred and his customers see this as a positive sign of growth. Acme Guns and Gear is a stocking dealer for Ruger, Glock, Springfield, Kimber, and others.
Of course if customers don’t see what they want in the display cabinets, a special order always remains an option. Fred said he has a decent turn-around time on special orders, generally taking just two or three days.
Another pleasant surprise for Fred and Elizabeth is how the used-gun business has increased. Buying and selling of used guns is on the rise at Acme, and the shop has every used gun it sells inspected by a certified gunsmith.
“It’s just the right thing to do,” Fred said. “I want to make sure it’s safe and operational before I put it on the shelf and sell it to someone else.”
And for those in need of gunsmithing for firearms they already own, Fred said Acme can help with referrals, too.
While the sales trends have changed a bit, handguns are still the top sellers at Acme Guns. Things are starting to move away from the compact concealed carry guns, though, as many of Fred and Elizabeth’s customers look toward larger framed pistols and revolvers that are more comfortable to shoot and better suited for the range.
Concealed carry is still a hot topic, though, and Fred said he makes about 25 or more referrals each month for those seeking a concealed carry instructor.
Fred explained that Acme Guns wants to keep moving forward, growing and expanding as it can. The shop stocks far more accessories now than it did one year ago, and there are plenty of options available when it comes to lights and lasers. Acme is also a Galco holster dealer, with a variety of gun leather for many of the most popular firearms on the market. Acme Guns and Gear is also stocking a variety of rings and mounts now, and even offers the Redfield line of optics. The shop will continue to look for ways to expand upon the accessories offered, and Fred welcomes feedback from his customers.
You can’t talk about guns and accessories without talking about ammunition. Everyone with a gun knows that getting your hands on ammunition has been a challenge in the last year, but Acme is doing everything it can to keep customers loaded up and shooting. Fred confirmed that ammo supplies are slowly beginning to return, but stressed some offerings will remain difficult to get for the next year. Acme Guns and Gear certainly has a broad offering of ammunition, though, and carries everything from target rounds to specialized bullets for hunting and self-defense.
“Whatever you need, my advice is just to not wait until the last minute,” Fred added. “When it comes to guns and ammunition, nothing is a given and it may take time to get some items. Hunting season is almost here.”
And while the new gun business occupies most of the showroom at Acme, Fred and Elizabeth also stay busy with the gold business, as it too continues to grow.
Fred said that both the gold buying and sales aspects of the business continue to stay strong, and several lines are really taking off. Acme is a Rolex and James Avery dealer, and the shop carries lots of things that wouldn’t necessarily be seen in many shops at the mall. For those in need of repair, it is important to remember that Acme can handle jewelry repair. Fred also reminds customers that he views his gold business from a wholesale perspective, and encourages customers not to pay “retail” at many of the other stores.
“There are great deals to be had,” he said.
While Fred and Elizabeth remain thrilled with the growth of their business, the couple were quick to thank their customers and the entire community.
“We have had a lot of community support from residents and business owners,” Fred said. “We just really appreciate everyone for their support.”
Acme Guns and Gear is located at 540 10th St., Ste. 130, in Floresville.
