Wilson County residents are falling victim to a money card scam, losing from $800 to 1,000 after following instructions from scammers by phone.

One victim contacted the Wilson County News about the scam after filing a report Oct. 24 with the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office. The victim said she received a phone call, saying she had won a cash prize of $1 million and a car in the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes, but she needed to pay the taxes.

To do so, she was instructed to go to Walmart, purchase Green Dot Money Pack cards, and advise the caller of the card numbers.

Richard Nichols, investigator with the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed that a report had been filed.

Nichols warns area residents that if you receive a call and it sounds fraudulent, it probably is.

For more information about this, read the Oct. 30 print edition of the Wilson County News.

It is pretty shocking someone would fall for it. And then admit it publicly.
