Bears shut out Poteet Aggies in district game

LA VERNIA -- In a district matchup the La Vernia Bear football team was sure to win, the team produced big numbers.
The Bears played a strong offensive and defensive game at their home stadium Friday.
Scoring 29 points in the first quarter alone, the Bears outplayed the small Poteet team.
Vince Gill scored the first points of the game with a 3-yard run with 9:35 left in the first. Levi Andrews made the 2-point conversion.
Less than two minutes later, Justus Parker caught a 37-yard pass from Colby Skelton. Kyle Douglas kicked the extra point.
Poteet earned two offside penalties after each touchdown.
Gill ran the ball in from 8 yards out with 4:01 remaining in the quarter, giving the Bears another 6 points. Douglas made the kick.
Rudy Mendoza scored the last points of the quarter with a 20-yard carry. The extra-point kick was good.
The Bears started the second quarter with another touchdown, giving them a huge lead on the scoreboard.
Andrews ran back a 38-yard punt for a touchdown with 10:31 remaining.
Braedon Wegehaupt ran in for a 10-yard touchdown play with 6:16 left in the half. Douglas kicked the extra point.
The Bears earned the last points of the half with a 26-yard run by Gill with two minutes on the clock. Douglas brought the score to 50-0 at the half.
The Aggies returned from the half with a defeated spirit, losing two players to injuries.
The Bears maintained a sportsmanlike conduct, only scoring two touchdowns in the third and one in the fourth quarter.
Jevante Anderson scored both of the touchdowns in the third quarter. The first was a 47-yard run with 11:17 left and the second was for 16 yards with 5:44 remaining. Douglas made both extra-point kicks.
Blake Burns earned the Bears’ last points of the game with a 26-yard carry with 8:39 remaining in the game. The final score was 70-0, in favor of La Vernia
The Bears played a ground-heavy offensive game, grossing 415 yards with 37 passing. The Aggies also played a ground game but finished with only 86 total yards, 30 from passing.
Anderson led the rushing game with a 31.5-yard-per-carry average but Gill led the team in yards, earning 112 yards. Anderson scored on both rushing attempts; Gill scored on three of his eight.
Parker finished the game with 37 receiving yards and a touchdown on his one catch of the game.
Each team lost a total of 50 yards, with La Vernia receiving seven penalties and Poteet with six.
La Vernia heads into its third district game with a 2-0 record, 7-1 overall. Poteet heads to a bye week with a 1-8 record, 0-3 in district.
La Vernia will face Sam Houston on the Hurricanes’ home turf Friday, Nov. 1. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
