Bears take wind out of Hurricanes
Colton Parrish (17) throws a block for Rudy Mendoza (3) during La Vernia’s 39-0 district win over Sam Houston last Friday night.

SAN ANTONIO -- For the second time in as many weeks, the La Vernia Bear defense held its opponent scoreless, while the Bear offense put tons of points on the board.
To say the La Vernia defense shut down the Sam Houston Hurricane offense would be a gross understatement. In truth, Sam Houston managed just 19 total yards and two first downs on the night. Sam Houston ran the ball 17 times but gained just 6 yards, while throwing seven times, completing four passes for 13 yards. The Hurricanes fumbled five times, and punted the ball on seven occasions.
On the other hand, the Bear offense showed it can gain positive yardage and score by using a variety of weapons in its arsenal. The Bears pulled way back from their 70-0 shellacking of Poteet a week earlier, but still hung 39 points on the board, and easily picked up the victory.
The first score of the night came at the 4:27 mark in the first quarter as Landon Richter scored from 8 yards out. Then, early in the second, Vince Gill scored on a 3-yard run, and quarterback Colby Skelton connected with Richter for the 2-point conversion to make the score 14-0.
Late in the first half the Bear defense picked up 2 points off a safety, and the La Vernia offense quickly went to work with a short field following the kickoff. The Bears scored less than two minutes later as Skelton connected with Justus Parker for 25 yards and a touchdown. The point-after kick was no good, but the score stood at 22-0 at the break.
Midway through the third quarter, La Vernia added to the score, as Tristan Summy broke loose from the 50-yard line. Kyle Douglas added the point-after. Douglass then put 3 more points on the board with a 39-yard field goal, and the Bears led 32-0 going into the fourth.
The final touchdown of the night came early in the fourth quarter as Summy ran in from 13 yards out. Douglas added the extra point, and the final score stood at 39-0.
Skelton completed 10 of 14 passing attempts for 113 yards and the touchdown to Parker. Parker had two catches and 42 total yards. Colton Parrish caught four passes for 32 yards, Gill caught two passes for 26 yards, Rudy Mendoza caught a pass for 10 yards, and Richter caught one for 3 steps.
Gill ran the ball 17 times for the Bears, picking up 40 yards and a touchdown. Richter ran four times for 25 yards, and Jevante Anderson ran five times for 23 yards. Summy ended the night with 76 yards and two touchdowns on just three carries.
The victory improves La Vernia’s overall record to 8-1, and the Bears are 3-0 in district play. It sets the stage for a big showdown in Somerset this Friday, as the Bears take on the Bulldogs in the last game of the regular season. La Vernia has locked up a spot in the playoffs, and is now looking for sole ownership of the district title. A win in Somerset would guarantee it. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
