Letter: Stringent ID law may discourage voters

I presented my Texas driver license and my voter registration card and was then told the two IDs did not exactly match. One had my middle name and the other had my middle initial. I was told I could vote but would have to initial a box stating I am the same person and would have to do this every time I vote, or I could sign the voter registration card on the back and have it changed for next year.

This new voter ID law is making it harder to vote and I think in this great country we should make it easier to vote. Did the Legislature foresee this problem before they voted? Why did they not have the Texas Department of Public Safety and the voter registration office coordinate so this was not a problem?

How many people will have a similar experience? I believe the number will be a high one. Is anyone keeping track of this number? What is the percentage of fraud votes this bill was supposed to stop? I also believe this will discourage, not encourage, citizens from voting. Maybe that was the real purpose of this law.
