Concrete Cemetery group plans Nov. 17 meeting in LV
The headstone of Esperanza “Hope” Elizondo can be found in the Concrete Cemetery.
The Concrete Cemetery Association will meet on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m. in the GVEC meeting room at 13849 U.S. 87 in La Vernia.
Linda Walker, president of the association, invites members and friends of the Concrete Cemetery to attend and address the board with any concerns about the cemetery. Folks who visit the cemetery can view the grave of Hope Elizondo, a La Vernia student who was brutally murdered as she walked home from school in May 1938.
Her parents reported her missing and the sheriff’s office quickly responded and formed a search party. Among those who searched were Herron Wiseman, Oscar Tewes, Robert Scull, Asa Fuller, Charles Fuller, Sheriff George Boothe, and others. The people of La Vernia were devastated when they heard the news. Hope was buried in the Concrete Hispanic Cemetery. Her killer was found and executed in Huntsville. Hope’s parents, Pablo and Petra Elizondo, grieved for their beautiful daughter and Mrs. Elizondo died a few years later, apparently from grief. Hope’s brother lives in New Braunfels and her niece, in Georgetown.
