EAST CENTRAL -- Led by a three-pronged rushing attack, the East Central Hornet football team pounded the ball against Corpus Christi King last Friday night at Hornet Stadium and closed out the regular season with a 27-20 victory over the Mustangs.
King got things going midway through the first quarter by scoring the game’s initial points on an 11-yard passing play. The Mustangs added the extra point, and held a 7-0 lead with 4:54 to play in the first. The Hornets came back quickly, though, and scored their first touchdown of the night with less than a minute to play in the first. Johnathan Jackson, who led the Hornets with 115 yards on 21 carries, scored his first of four touchdowns with a 2-yard run over the goal line, and East Central was within a point. Dalton Zigmond came in for the extra point, and the teams were tied at 7-all heading into the second quarter.
The lone score of the second quarter occurred at the 6:52 mark, when Jackson ran in again from 2 yards deep. The point-after attempt was no good, but the Hornets had the lead at 13-7 as the teams went into the locker rooms.
East Central and Jackson scored their third touchdown of the game early in the second half, as Jackson broke one loose from the Hornet 38-yard line. The run was good for half of Jackson’s nightly yardage, and put another 6 points on the board. Zigmond added the extra point, and the score was 20-7 with 10:02 to play in the third.
King took less than a minute off the clock to answer the Hornets’ touchdown with one of its own. Mustang quarterback Bronze Jackson threw his second touchdown of the night with 9:21 to play in the third, this time hitting Tristan Price from 9 yards out. The extra point was good, and the score stood at 20-14.
Johnathan Jackson had one more touchdown in him, and it came at the 4:45 mark of the third quarter. Jackson ran in from the 1-yard line, and the extra point gave East Central a 27-14 lead with 4:45 to play in the third.
The final score of the night came early in the fourth quarter as Bronze Jackson ran in from a yard out. The point-after kick was no good, and the Hornet defense held on for a 27-20 victory.
Hornet senior quarterback Jeremy Jones completed 11 of 21 passes for 129 yards. Justin Upshaw-Mendoza caught two passes for 35 yards, Wanya Ward caught three passes for 31 paces, and Jackson caught two tosses for 24 more. Treyvon Hinson had two receptions for 21 yards and Dallas Polasek caught two passes for 18 yards.
Javion Polk had another good game for East Central, as he averaged more than 6 yards per carry en route to 111 total yards on 18 carries. Jones ran 15 times for 97 yards.
The Hornets finished the regular season with an overall record of 5-5, and East Central was 3-2 in district play, good enough to finish in a tie for second place.
East Central will enter the playoffs this Friday, Nov. 15, as the Hornets square off with the 8-2 Warren Warriors at Gustafson Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
