LA VERNIA -- The La Vernia Lady Bear volleyball team had another great year and won another district title in 2013, but after a disappointing loss to Columbus in the area championship, the team’s season is now over.

The Lady Bears entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed out of District 28-3A, but stumbled a bit during their bi-district playoff match with Boerne. In what should have been a quick win, the Lady Bears played five tight games before eventually securing a win.

Boerne took the first game by the score of 26-24, but the Lady Bears came back for a win in the second game, 25-22. The third game went into extra points, as well, as La Vernia held on for a 26-24 victory. Boerne got the best of La Vernia in the fourth, but Head Coach Theresa Reyes rallied her troops and the Lady Bears ripped off a 15-7 win in the fifth.

Senior Brooke Haliscak had another great match, racking up a total of 31 kills. Sara Hill pitched in another 12 for good measure. Morgan Mikes handled most of the setting duties with 36 assists, and Haliscak and Mikes also led the defensive stand with seven digs apiece.

In the second round of playoff competition, the Lady Bears took on Columbus. The Cardinals had another good season in 2013, and La Vernia appeared ill-prepared for them. Columbus picked up a convincing game-one win by the score of 25-18, and then blew past La Vernia 25-14 in the second game.

The Lady Bears needed to turn things around in the third game, and they did improve. La Vernia kept things close, but in the end, it was Columbus holding on for the 25-23 win.

While the Cardinals advanced to the regional quarterfinals, the loss knocked La Vernia out of the playoffs. The girls end their year with a good record of 25-17, and another district title to their credit.

La Vernia is going to have some big holes to fill next season, as the team says goodbye to Haliscak, Hill, Mikes, Madi Towns, and Kacey Reinen. It’s not a new problem for the Lady Bears, though, and La Vernia is a school that tends to “reload” rather than “rebuild.”

La Vernia def. Boerne, 24-26, 25-22, 26-24, 17-25, 15-7 (bi-district playoff).

Lady Bears: Kills: Brooke Haliscak-31, Sara Hill-12, Ashley Frederick-7, Madison Towns-6, Morgan Mikes-2. Assists: Morgan Mikes-36, Audrey Mayes-16, Haliscak-2, Hill-2. Aces: Haliscak-3, Mikes-1. Digs: Haliscak-7, Mikes-7, Mayes-3, Hill-2, Towns-2, Frederick-1. Blocks: Haliscak-1, Hill-0.5. Overall Record: 25-16.

Columbus def. La Vernia, 25-18, 25-14, 25-23 (area championship).
