Demetrio T. ‘El Wero’ Gomez
Demetrio T. “El Wero” Gomez, a lifelong resident of San Antonio, Texas, entered eternal rest Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at 11:32 p.m. in San Antonio at the age of 83 years, 7 months, and 5 days. Demetrio was born in Stockdale to Juan and Guadalupe (Trevino) Gomez on April 4, 1930, and lost his father when he was 20 months old.
He was raised in Floresville and enjoyed deer hunting in his younger years. Demetrio was a self-employed painter most of his life, but he was always ready and willing to help where needed, and possessed many skills such as mechanic, cook, gardener, and repairing juke boxes and pool tables, to name a few.
Demetrio was preceded in death by his parents; maternal grandparents Leonardo and Sofia (Rodriguez) Trevino; stepfathers Andres Castillo Alderete and Francisco Davalos; daughter Carolyn Velasquez; one infant Gomez sibling; brothers Alberto Gomez, Clemente Gomez, and Apolonio “Polo” Gomez; sisters Julia Gomez Lucio (Jesus), Sofia Gomez Herrera (Ignacio), Josefina Gomez Flores (Trinidad), Tomasa Alderete, Eloisa Alderete Villarreal (Joe), and Adelena Alderete.
He is survived by his children, John E. Gomez, Joe David Gomez (Guadalupe L. Espinoza), and Lorraine G. Sifuentes, all of San Antonio, and Michael and Tama Gomez of Midwest City, Okla.; son-in-law John Velasquez of San Antonio; sister Elvira Alderete Oates (Jack) of San Antonio; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Visitation was held on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 5 p.m. followed by a recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville.
A funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville, officiated by the Rev. Frank Kurzaj.
Interment followed in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Floresville.
Serving as pallbearers were Nicholas Padron, Andrew Padron, John Chavez, Leonard Sifuentes, Joseph Sifuentes, and Victor Gomez.
