1917-2013

Bernard Haran Anderson, a lifelong resident of Elmendorf, Texas, passed away Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, in his residence in Elmendorf at the age of 96 years, 8 months, and 21 days. Bernard was born Feb. 17, 1917, in Jourdanton, the son of Dudley Aaron and Susannah Elizabeth Woodward Anderson.

Bernard graduated from Elmendorf High School, and worked for many years in civil service at Kelly Air Force Base. Bernard was also a farmer who grew vegetables for his family. The family spent many times together shelling peas, canning, and enjoying the many fruits of their father’s labors. Almost every day, they were presented with a wheelbarrow of watermelons to enjoy. Bernard married Mary Louise Collins on March 24, 1940, in the Alamo Methodist Church in San Antonio. Bernard enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was aboard the USS West Virginia in the Pacific, bringing people home during World War II.

Bernard was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Louise Anderson; his grandson, Wesley Travis Riggs; and his siblings, Spurgeon Anderson, Nell Nall, Wilburn Anderson, and Bunnie Johnson.

He is survived by his children, Carolyn Louise Anderson Morris and husband David of Elmendorf and Sally Jane Anderson Riggs and husband Weldon of the Blackhill community; his grandchildren, Holly Morris, Gregory Morris and wife Margaret, Glenn Morris and wife Lea, Heather Edmister and husband David, Paul Riggs, and Wendy Riggs; his great-grandchildren, Natalie, Eleanor, Nicholas, Shawn, Christian, William, Tiffany, Michael, Ethan, and Isabelle; his great-great-grandson, Zachary; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, November 12, at 1 p.m. in the Oak Island United Methodist Church in San Antonio.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the church.

Interment followed in the Oak Island Cemetery in San Antonio.
