1937-2013

Charles J. Franklin went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, in Floresville, Texas, at the age of 76 years, 8 months, and 26 days. He was born on Feb. 5, 1937, in Covington, Ga., to Charles H. and Willie Agnes Franklin.

He was the owner and funeral director in charge of the Franklin Funeral Home in Floresville and former vice president and funeral director in charge of Mission Park Funeral Homes and Cemeteries. Charles was an avid sports fan. He loved and played baseball his whole life. He played during his school years and while serving in the U.S. Air Force. During his adult life, he played softball in leagues and tournaments. He managed his own team, The Crackers, in the Senior Softball Association and won the National Championship in 2004 and the World Championship in 2009, and was inducted into the Texas Softball Hall of Fame in 2007. He also loved coaching Little League baseball and was coach to many Floresville and San Antonio children over the years. Charles was awarded a ring for bowling a perfect 300 game in the 1990s. Above all this, his biggest dream was to own his own funeral home, which he also achieved. He loved and helped many families through difficult times with his funeral home, and in the process, made many dear friends.

Charles is survived by his wife, Arlene Franklin of Floresville; children Charlie Franklin and wife Krystal, Julie Schaker and husband George, and Joni Stefanic and husband Robert, all of San Antonio, and Boyd Littlefield and wife Rachelle of Floresville; grandchildren Allie Littlefield and Austin Littlefield of Floresville, and Julia Marie Franklin, Ashley Himes and husband David, Aubree Ramirez and husband Richard, Reed Stefanic, and Nick Schaker and Alex Schaker, all of San Antonio; great-grandchildren Avery Gover, Rush and Elijah Himes, and Ashlyn and Ryder Ramirez; sister Judy Smith and husband Bill of Georgia; aunt Joan Smith and husband Benny of Georgia; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Visitation was held on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 3 p.m. in the Franklin Funeral Home in Floresville.

A funeral service was held on Monday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. James McClure and Pastor Bennie Herrera officiating.

Interment followed in the Sutherland Springs Cemetery in Sutherland Springs.

Serving as pallbearers were Boyd Littlefield, Charlie Franklin, Austin Littlefield, Todd Burnett, Chad Burnett, George Schaker, Robert Stefanic, Nick Schaker, and Alex Schaker.
