Carrera Internaci’onal, Final points night at Central Texas Speedway, presented by A-Line Auto Parts, 11/16/13
Kyle, TX.,(Nov. 16th, 2013) Central Texas Speedway, the 3/8 mile, semi-banked, D-shaped track, just south of Austin concluded its 2013 points racing season Saturday night. Practice started under cloudy, warm and windy conditions throughout the day as drivers prepared for their final events for the year.
After the track suffered a rain out in its last effort, it was double point’s night for all the regular classes with the championships on the line. Points in several classes are too close to call going into the night’s action.
In the Truck class, Shawn Paul Lehman holds a slim eight point advantage over multi-time track champion, Cary Stapp. Michael Farish comes in with only seven markers between him and Scott Nester in the Grand Stocks.
The Bandolero class is one of the tightest with only four points separating Jon Fernandez and Brady Lind. The track points for the Texas Pro Sedan Series shows a mere point between Sergio Hexsel and Bob Sherland, followed closely by Johnny Guerra, Lalo Leal and JJ Osburn.
Smith Strikes Again
After a disappointing finish in his last Texas outing, Casey Smith(Austin) rebounded to take the another Pro Late Model win and track title. Smith, who led early, gave way to Bayley Currey, who out snookered him on a restart, during the mid stages of the 75-lapper. Smith retook the spot after Currey wore out his tires, then held off continued charges from Currey for the victory.
Smith led at the drop of the green with Austin Wayne Self, Currey, Tommy Grimes and Mike Reininger falling in line behind him. Grimes went around in turn 2 collecting Derek Scott jr. for an early yellow. Currey, on the outside, got the jump on Smith during the restart and shut the door in turn 1.
As the top four separated out and settled in, Ryan Luza, Bobby Teer jr. and Cory Lovell battled for fifth. Smith, who stayed within striking distance of Currey closed back in as the race neared halfway. Smith ducked low coming off turn 4 getting along side and by Currey to retake the lead on lap 33.
Behind the lead battle, Self, Reininger and Luza were nose to tail for third. At halfway it was Smith, Currey, Self, Luza and Grimes in the top five. Every time Smith and Currey would pull out to a lead a caution would rebunch the field for restarts.
Currey tried the same move on Smith as earlier in the race, but now Smith would hold him off. Restart after restart Currey would try the outside to no avail. Currey even tried a crossover move on one attempt, but the veteran Smith was not going to be denied.
On the final restart Smith held off Currey with three laps to go. With the white flag waving Self and Currey made contact sending Currey around collecting Grimes on the back stretch. Smith was left unchallenged in the Gary Buchanan owned, Smith Paving & Excavating, Sealmaster, Phil Harper powered, Hamke Chassis as he took the yellow and checkers.
“It's been a real good year here in Texas,” replied Smith. “Even running out of town we've done well and finished in the top five. Hopefully we can cap of the year with at least a top three finish in the Snowball Derby.”
“The restart with Bayley(Currey) worked out good eventually. I knew when he took off like that he was going to burn his stuff up. With these tires you can't that hard. I did want to get back in front of him before a restart and get hung on the outside.”
“All those restart he kept trying the same move. He's usually a pretty clean driver and I know he has a good spotter. We got together a couple times. He was trying to win the race, and it was nothing anything would do in that spot. It's good, hard, short track racing. I knew that restart with two to go was going to be wild.”
“Going to the Snowball Derby is always stiff competition. I believe right now there's 64 cars entered in my class. It's going to be tough to make it in, it always is, but we have a chance for a provisional. We're taking a new car down there Friday to test. I hope it's fast right out of the box. You want to try to make it in a Friday and not have to run the 'hooligan' race on Saturday to get in.”

Currey Captures Pro Modified Main and Championship
Young Bayley Currey showed patience beyond his years as he made his way to the front of the Pro Modified feature. Currey, who started fifth, picked off spots and capitalized on a tangle by the leaders. After a restart Currey stalked Michael Umscheid until he slipped up leaving Currey an opening. Once on the point, Currey, who had the title sewn up on green, motored away to a big lead going unchallenged to the finish.
Marshall eased out front at the start with Todd McLemore, Umscheid, Clayton Green and Dillon Spreen in pursuit. Marshall and McLemore began to ease ahead, while Logan Bearden and Currey got Green for fifth and sixth. Currey then picked off Bearden, then Spreen for fourth.
Lap 16 saw the lead duo get tangled going into turn 3 with McLemore getting on top of Marshall and they came to rest in the grass. Both were alright, McLemore was able to continue, but Marshall was done. This put Umscheid out front with Bearden slipping into second on the restart hanging Currey high.
Currey was able to do the same to Bearden after a yellow for spin by Anthony Monroe. At the crossed flags it was Umscheid, Currey, Bearden, Spreen and Green in the top five. Umscheid drifted too high off turn 4 giving Currey the bottom and Currey pounced on the opportunity to snag the lead.
Currey quickly began putting distance on the field, while Bearden worked his way by Umscheid for second. With five to go, Currey had built an advantage of almost a full straightaway on Bearden. The final few laps saw Currey, in the Evo-Frac, Chasco Construction, BMF Shocks, Wildchild Motorsports, BMF Chassis on cruise control for the win.
“It was a lot of luck tonight,” explained Currey. “The two leaders were pretty quick and I had to get used to driving a Pro Modified again after running the Late Model so much. I just got my rhythm and went to the front.”
“I mainly just to get on and off the gas a little slower and brake a whole lot sooner on the smaller tires. You get a little advantage running two cars, you know what the track is doing and can adjust the car from there. It can be a pain having to jump from one to another when you're tired after the race.”
“I didn't really see what happened to the leaders. I just it when I went by, and it wasn't too pretty. Winning one and getting wrecked in the Late Model was kind of overwhelming. We'll get 'em next time.”

Lehman Lands Win and Title
Manchaca's Shawn Paul Lehman knew what he had to take home the Truck championship, keep Cary Stapp in sight. Lehman got the lead after a restart when he made contact with his bother, Colt James, which should make for interesting holiday conversations. Once on the point Lehman, in his Romo Racing, MOC Central, SS Motorsports, GM crate powered, TRC Chassis led the final circuits for the victory and championship.
As the 16-track field took the green Mason Teague jumped out front with James on his tail and Jim Nides, Stapp, and Adam Haugh three wide for third. Stapp gave up spots to Haugh and Jason Marshall. Stapp and Lehman were now door to door, not only fighting for sixth, but a championship.
Teague began to fall off the pace giving the lead to James on lap 21, while Stapp and Lehman swapped the fifth spot. Both picked up another spot as they got by Haugh. After a Teague spin, Stapp got second from Marshall on the restart, but gave up the spot again, with Lehman following Marshall.
Another spin by Teague on lap 31 set up an interesting restart. Lehman, on the high side, tried to drop in front of Marshall but the two made contact. Lehman, trying to save his truck, got into James who went around in turn 2 with Stapp getting caught in the stack up. Both Stapp and James would go to the back, while Lehman assumed the lead.
As green waved again with Lehman on point, Marshall, Jim Albert, Nides and Jesse Salazar found themselves in the top five. James and Stapp quickly made their way back up with James getting back to second. James got Lehman's bumper, but avoided any contact allowing Lehman to get the win and title.
“It was a big win for us tonight.” said Lehman. “It's been pretty nerve wracking over the past month and a half thinking about it after the rain out. I can breathe now.”
“We were junk all day in practice. After the hard wreck we had in San Antonio we figured it was something we missed fixing it. You usually look at the old parts for problems. We had changed the steering box with new one and after only 40 laps of practice it had broken at the adjustment bolt.”
“It was a bad deal getting into Colt(James). I heard my spotter say clear, it looked like I was clear in my mirror but as I came down I got hit in the quarter panel. I let off the brake trying to save the truck and I slammed into the back of my brother. It was a sickening feeling. I'm sure he'll pay me back for it one day. When he caught back up I'm sure he was thinking of me and the championship and was generous to me.”
“It happened. He'll owe me and I'll owe him. I just don't want to be the dirty Busch brother. The family will probably put us at the kids table for Christmas.”
“Cary and I have been friends for fifteen years. That's pretty hard to do when you race against somebody all that time. We're either battling up front or at least in the top five all the time. We're both very competitive. I was more worried about something happening between us during the race. I just tried to stay were I could see him and let it be whatever it was going to be.”
“I wanted to give Chris(Romo) his first championship. He's done a lot for us. I was pretty retired three years and not having fun racing. I met Chris who had a car he wanted me to drive for him. He sold that car and a month later he called about a sponsorship he had worked out and asked me drive his truck. It revitalized me and I'm having fun again.

Heil Hustles to TALMS Trophy
John Heil(Floresville) was able to go to wire to wire to take home the honors in the 30-lap Texas Asphalt Racing Series main event. After a lap 1 crash eliminated the original front row, Heil started out front and the well known chassis and shock builder then held off the 20-car field to grab the victory.
After the invert Colt James and Anthony Monroe paced the pack to green. Going into turn 2 James and Monroe got together stacking up the field behind them. Several cars suffered damage in the melee, with Tanner Whitmire and Bobby Sanford done for the night.
Heil jumped out front on the second start trailed by points leader Cody Beddoe, Michael Carlock, Cary Stapp and Don Krahn. After restarting at the tail, James quickly made his way back into the top ten with Monroe trying to mirror his tracks. James cracked the top five getting by Krahn on lap 11.
Coming to halfway, Teresa Gural, who was getting black flagged for loose body parts, got clipped by Kale Westover and spun to bring out a caution. The top five at the midway point were Heil, Beddoe, Carlock, Stapp and James.
Heil got a good jump on green with Beddoe and Stapp side by side for second. James took advantage of that battle sneaking past both for second while Stapp fell back into a three wide battle with Westover and Carlock.
As Heil pulled away from James and Beddoe, Monroe joined the fight for fourth between Westover and Carlock. After Monroe cleared both Westover and Carlock got hooked together in turn 2 for lap 26 caution setting up a four lap dash to checkers.
Heil again got a good restart leaving James and Beddoe wheel to wheel for second. Beddoe eventually cleared James, but Heil in the Rack in Motion, BMF Shocks, Mission Race Engines, BMF Chassis was long gone on his way to the win. Beddoe's second place finish gave him the TALMS title ahead of Monroe. Kevin Gould went home the track Sportmod Championship.
“It was a good car,” commented Heil. “Good cars are easy to win races with. I saw those guys crash on the first lap. I looked for a hole to get through and tried not to crash with them.”:
“I've been racing for quite a few years so it's easy for me to climb back behind the wheel every now and then. It all comes back pretty quick. I just got in the car, pushed the gas pedal and the car did the rest.”
“I've raced this car a couple times this year and it's been pretty good. I've got some good employees that work on it. We put some different parts on it this week and it helped it. Rick(Pollaro) owns the car and he's nice enough to let me drive it. I don't think it would have taken much for anyone to win it. I was just the one behind the wheel tonight.”

Back to Back for Barker
Boerne's Robert Barker backed up his big season-ender at San Antonio Speedway last month taking home another trophy. Barker, who was fast qualifier, started third with the invert and chased early leader Brandon Spreen. Once past Spreen, Barker in the Mission Auto Parts, Rack in Motion, Circle K Construction, BMF Shocks, Mission Race Engines, Chevy eased away to score the win.
At the drop of the green, Spreen jumped out front with Barker side by side with Kenny Hurley and Brian Schneider door to door with Paul Reyes jr. As the top three sorted out, David Sevilla made his way by Schneider and Reyes for fourth. Reyes began to fade and spun in front of the leaders for a lap 17 yellow.
On the restart, Hurley hung Barker out high to take over second, but Schneider went off turn 4 for a lap 19 caution. Barker returned the favor leaving Hurley out on the top side to regrab second. Barker quickly got under Spreen after a brief side by side fight to get the lead on lap 25.
Hurley was able to follow Barker past Spreen for second, but never able to mount a serious challenge. Barker, a past San Antonio Speedway and Texas Super Racing Series Late Model Champion cruised to the checkers.
“It's a good way to cap off the year(with two wins), replied Barker. “It's nice doing my own thing, with my own car and being able to come out make a good showing. It's always fun when you get some wins.”
“We had a good three-way battle for the lead. Those guys did a good job and luckily I was able to take the lead and get the win. We had a lot of respect for each other. He drove me clean and he knew it was time to give it up.”
“You worry about restarting on the outside here. I was in second on that one restart and got shuffled back. Fortunately another caution came out and I got the inside. Then I was able to get by Brandon(Spreen) for the lead. There was a little rubbing out there, but this is Kyle and that's what it takes sometimes.”
“My car was really good the whole weekend. It was fast, even in practice we had a little bit on everybody. We kept making a few changes and by race time I was happy with it. I think my car was the best there at the end.”
“We'll see what the rules are for next year and go from there. I've heard there are ways to race these cars in Houston, plus we'll run here and hopefully something will happen with San Antonio again.”

Joshua McCain jumped out front in the Grand Stock feature trailed by Mike Pollaro, points leader Mike Farish, Eric Ramos and Sean Folsom. The points chase took an early turn towards Farish after Scott Nester was forced to pit with a flat, losing several laps.
McCain surrendered the lead under caution when he pulled off handing the position to Farish. Farish was able to break away from Marcia Moore and Rick Pollaro, while M. Pollaro, Folsom and Michael Weaver battled for fourth. Farish went to snag to the victory and the title.

Jim Degroat got the lead as the 20-car Dwarf Car feature set sail chased by Ryan Stoy, Russell Rust, Billy Groff and Hayden Becker. After a restart, Becker took over the top spot and was being pursued by Danny Davis and points leader Todd McLemore.
At one point the top three were running nose to tail as diced through slower cars. In the final laps Jerry Young made a late charge for the lead. Becker, Davis and young were nearly three wide coming off turn on the run the checkers. Becker held off all charges for the victory, McLemore's fourth place finish gave him the track championship.

After setting fast time in Texas Pro Sedan qualifying, Sergio Hexsel was relegated to the back after missing the drivers meeting. It appeared to give Hexsel more motivation as he quickly sliced through the 17-car field, headed towards the front.
Hexsel caught Lalo Leal, who got the top spot after early leader Tom Johnson broke. Hexsel got past Leal just past halfway and from there pulled away to the win, track championship and Texas Pro Sedan title.

The Mini Stock feature saw Kris Wilson lead into turn 1, but it was Kelly Reininger out front coming off turn 2. K. Reininger was chased by points leader Richard Fitch as the two broke away from the pack.
R. Fitch caught K. Reininger in traffic during the latter stages and got along side. R. Fitch was able to lead lap 18, But K. Reininger retook the spot as the white flag waved. The two traded some paint coming to the checkers, but K. Reininger was able to score her first ever win, with R. Fitch taking home the championship.

With a limited number of Karts on hand Jason Marshall locked up the championship before the green flag flew. Chris Baker tried his best to make it close leading the early stages of the feature, but fell out with problems. Corey O’Donnell took over the lead from there and grabbed the checkers.
