Letter: 50 years ago in Big D
My memory of President Kennedy -- I was a college student in Dallas in 1963. The phone rang, and my studying was interrupted. I picked up the phone, and my sister-in-law said in an anxious tone that the president had been shot! I raced to the TV, and all channels were carrying the news that JFK had been shot, and that he was being taken to Parkland Hospital. I was absolutely flabbergasted! How terrible!
Of course, now we know that he had no chance to survive, because he had suffered a devastating head wound.
My wife, whom I did not know in 1963 and who passed in 2008, was a candy striper volunteer at Parkland Hospital and saw the commotion when the presidential motorcade arrived at the hospital. She was held back by security. Also, she knew President Johnson and his family, as they lived in the same area of the Texas Hill Country (Kerrville/Johnson City).
On Sunday of the same week, I was riding with friends to a flag football game at North Texas State, which was north of Dallas. In utter amazement I heard that Lee Harvey Oswald had been shot and killed by Jack Ruby, as Oswald was being moved to another place of detention.
Again, I was totally amazed! How could the Dallas police be so stupid as to allow anyone to get close to Oswald?
