Members of the Poth High School speech team competed Nov. 14 in the first UIL Congressional District 20 meet in La Vernia. In attendance were 21 schools ranging from 2A to 5A with 65 competitors. Daniel Soto led the way with a first-place finish, followed by Clayton Jaskinia, second; and Rosa Rosales, third.
Congress is an individual event in a large group setting. It models the legislative process of democracy, like that of the U.S. Congress. Contestants draft legislation and research bills and resolutions dealing with real-world policies prior to the contest to prepare their speeches. Team members only had seven days to research the topics, compose speeches, and then practice the event. The team will compete at the State Congressional Meet in Austin in January.
The Poth team is coached by Amy Lyssy.
