Eagle Ford: County seeks site for CDL testing
Prompted by a letter from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the Wilson County Commissioners Court has begun looking for a new site to conduct commercial driver license tests.
County Judge Marvin Quinney read the letter at the Nov. 25 commissioners court meeting.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires DPS to implement new testing provisions for commercial drivers by July 2015.
After that month, drivers of big trucks and other commercial vehicles won’t be able to qualify for their license at the current DPS office in Floresville on U.S. 181.
According to the letter, the site for conducting commercial driver testing should be located on 2 acres of level land, include a 1,500-square-foot building, provide easy access to commercial vehicles, and be adjacent to a highway.
Quinney said he would “appreciate suggestions” for property that would meet the criteria.
If Wilson County cannot establish a new location in time, it could coordinate with another county on a joint-use location within a 75-mile radius.
“I don’t think we [Wilson County] can handle this by ourselves,” Quinney said. “We’ll look to our cities to collectively come up with something.”
The judge directed that a copy of the DPS letter be sent to the incorporated cities in Wilson County.
Pct. 4 Commissioner Larry Wiley pointed out that the city that provides the location might find some economic advantages.
The commissioners also dealt with animal-control issues Nov. 25, among other items. See page 1A for related article.
