Tiger basketball team wins

The Floresville Tiger basketball team hosted its first home game last Tuesday night against the FEAST Patriots.

The Tigers got off to a slow start, as the Patriots took a quick 5-1 lead by hitting a bucket in the paint and then knocking down a 3-pointer. But the Tigers stayed steady and their offense began to come together with senior Estevan Mendiola finding his perimeter game and shooting well from the free-throw line to help the Tigers end the first quarter up 21-19. The Tigers continued to shoot well from the perimeter in the second quarter, leaving them with a slight edge going into the locker room, 39-35.

The Tigers kept their lead through the second half of the game, finishing with a 72-63 victory over the Patriots. Junior Zach Chambers led the Tigers offensively with 19 points, and Mendiola and junior Jared Kotzur also finished in double digits, with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Point guard Derek “Mooch” Moczygemba distributed the ball well, leading the team with five assists, and Chris Albert led the team with four blocks.

It was on to the next opponent, as the Tigers made the long drive down to Port Lavaca to face the Sandcrabs last Friday night. The Tigers were quick to score, running off 8 unanswered points within the first three minutes of the game. The Tigers never looked back, finishing with a 68-57 win over the Sandcrabs on their home court.

Mooch played well defensively with four steals and ran the offense well, leading the team with six assists. The Tigers finished with three players in double digits, as Chambers had 15 points, Albert scored 14 points, and Mendiola dropped in another 12 points.

The Tigers will play the Kerrville Tivy Antlers at home Wednesday, Nov. 27. Members of the community are invited to go out and support the Tigers.
