Means honored with Golden Spur Award
Jackie Means joins her husband, Jon Means, the recipient of the Golden Spur Award presented during the 36th annual National Golden Spur Award ceremony in Lubbock.
Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA) Past President Jon Means was awarded the 36th annual National Golden Spur Award Saturday during a ceremony at the National Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock.
The Golden Spur recognizes outstanding contributions to the ranching and livestock industry. Besides honoring an individual, the award spotlights the humanistic and scientific contributions of the livestock and ranching industries to society.
Means is a fourth-generation West Texas rancher. He makes his home with his wife, Jackie, at the Moon Ranch near Van Horn.
Means served as TSCRA president from 2007-09. During that time Means led the association’s relocation efforts of more than 12,000 cattle displaced by Hurricane Ike.
“Jon was an example to all of us ranchers during that devastating hurricane,” said Pete Bonds, North Texas rancher and current TSCRA president. “His leadership helped many affected ranchers get to the other side of the disaster.”
Bonds says that it’s not only Means’ work with the association that makes him worthy of the Golden Spur, but it’s also his continued dedication to preserving the land and resources of his family’s land. Means has carefully implemented natural resource conservation efforts in the Texas Pecos region. He has continued to produce quality beef, while protecting and enhancing our natural resources.
The Golden Spur is a joint recognition by some of the industry’s leading organizations, among them the American Quarter Horse Association, National Cattlemen’s Foundation, Ranching Heritage Association, Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, Texas Cattle Feeders Association, and Texas Farm Bureau.
Golden Spur Award recipients are selected annually by a committee representing each of the sponsoring organizations. Those honored have included individuals from across the United States and represent virtually every aspect of the livestock and agribusiness industry.
