Leonard Norris ‘Buddy’ Brandon
Leonard Norris “Buddy” Brandon, 71, passed away Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013. He was born May 29, 1941, in Houston, Texas, to Oran and Gertrude Williams Brandon.
Buddy married Barbara Jane Dawe on Jan. 4, 1986, in Gonzales. He was a member of the Gonzales Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. Buddy was raised by his grandparents. As a youngster Buddy spent a great deal of time in the woods of East Texas hunting and fishing. The love of fishing certainly endured in him throughout his life. As a little boy he was put to work driving a logging truck hauling timber. He learned very early in life how to rebuild engines. He learned carpentry and this became his passion as he opened a successful construction company in Houston. He later started BranCo, an oil-field service and equipment company. There wasn’t a piece of equipment or machinery Buddy couldn’t operate. It might have taken him a moment, but typically after a little experimentation, a few choice words, and possibly a pull or two of his favorite libation, he simply mastered the operation of whatever lay before him. Buddy tested for and received his master electrician license. As his wife said, “He was a jack of all trades and a master of all trades.” Buddy built the house that he and Barbara call home and their lake home on H-5. Buddy was generous and loyal to his family and friends; he was a man of integrity. Some might say he was tough as boot leather, mean as a badger, but as caring as a mother hen. The latter certainly applied to his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends; he loved them so very much.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters Susie Brandon and Jackie Bairfield.
Buddy is survived by his wife, Barbara Brandon of Gonzales; daughters Julie Brandon of Conroe and Tammie Brandon and husband Sam Baker of Houston; sons Richard Brandon and wife Kim of Grangerland, Jessie Brandon and wife Shirley of Scurry, Jon Dawe and wife Debbie of Waco, and Martin Dawe and wife Sandra of Katy; brother Carl Brandon and wife Kim; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, Dec. 6, at 10 a.m. in the Seydler-Hill Funeral Home in Gonzales, with the Rev. Warren Hornung to officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 841125, Dallas, TX 75284-1125; or to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.
