Reward stands at $20K

Dec. 7 will mark the three-year anniversary of the disappearance of Pauline Cantu Diaz of San Antonio. The then-63-year-old great-grandmother last was seen leaving her job at the H-E-B supermarket near the intersection of Goliad Road and Southeast Military Drive in San Antonio.

According to the website paulinediaz.com, a reward for information that leads to Diaz’s whereabouts or to those involved with her disappearance stands at $20,000.

District Attorney Rene Peña said, “There is still a very active investigation.”

Diaz’s estranged husband, Pedro Ruiz, claimed to be the last one to see her on Dec. 7, 2010. Diaz’s white 2010 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was located near the intersection of U.S. 181 and C.R. 320, just a few miles from the home the couple had shared on Flores Oaks north of Floresville.

Ruiz later was granted a divorce from Diaz, who family members said earlier had planned to divorce him after moving out of the home shortly before she disappeared. Diaz had been staying with her son, Richard Diaz Jr., in a home on the southeast side of San Antonio. He began searching for his mother after she did not return home that evening.

Diaz now would be 66 years old. She is a Hispanic female, described as standing 4 feet, 11 inches tall and weighing 135 pounds. Diaz has gray hair, brown eyes, and last was seen wearing her red H-E-B uniform shirt, blue jeans, and black sneakers. She also wears wire-rimmed eyeglasses.

The Diaz disappearance bears some similarity to another high-profile
missing-person case being investigated by officials in both Bexar and

Wilson counties -- the Dec. 25, 1996, disappearance of Patty Inez Brightwell Vaughan of Adkins. The then-32-year-old was reported missing the next day after she did not drop off her children at a family member’s home and did not report for work at Quinney Electric.

Assistant District Attorney Audrey Louis of the 81st Judicial District confirmed recently that officials from that office would continue to support the investigation and that plans are being finalized to conduct a further search of an undisclosed location for possible evidence. The district attorney’s office has agreed to finance this search.

Anyone with information about either of these cases is urged to call the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office at 830-393-2535. Anonymous tips -- for which cash rewards are available if information leads to an arrest or to the safe return of a missing person -- can be furnished to Crime Stoppers of Wilson County at 830-393-INFO (4636) or http://bit.ly/NDrIut.
