Winter weather in South Central Texas

The Austin-San Antonio National Weather has issued the following weather update Dec. 4.

A blast of Arctic air will bring much colder conditions and possibly freezing rain/sleet as early as Thursday night, Dec. 5 into Saturday, Dec. 7.

Cold conditions everywhere, freezing rain/sleet possible along and north of U.S 90 -- roughly from Del Rio to Schulenburg.

Average rainfall generally less than 1/4 inch for the five day total from Thursday through Monday. The main impact will be minor icing on bridges and other elevated surfaces, which could cause minor travel problems. Winter weather advisories will likely be issued for portions of South Central Texas.

Very cold temperatures will remain into early next week with chances of freezing precipitation finally going away.

SAFETY TIPS. Cold weather safety revolves around the four P(s): People, pets, plants, and pipes. People and pets should stay indoors or be dressed appropriately when outside. Frostbite and hypothermia can result from extended exposure to the elements, both of which are serious and require immediate warming and medical attention. Plants should be brought indoors or covered. While the cold outbreak will be of long duration, it does not appear to be severe enough to cause pipe burst problems (usually requires long periods of temperatures in the low 20s or colder).
