POTH (revised) -- Two suspects who officials say are responsible for critically wounding an officer from the San Antonio Police Department were taken into custody north of here on the morning of Dec. 8.

Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Anthony Flores said that in the early morning hours, 32-year-old Shaun Ruiz Puente and 28-year-old Jenevieve Ramos are being held in the Wilson County Jail where they wait to appear before a magistrate judge. The two are believed to have shot San Antonio Police Department Officer Robert Deckard during a pursuit on I-37 that ended in Atascosa County when the wounded officer wrecked his patrol car.

Patrolman Roberto “R.J.” Sanchez Jr., a 4-year veteran of the Poth Police Department -- who had ended his shift moments before -- spotted the suspects’ primer black Mitsubishi Lancer on U.S. 181 near the intersection of F.M. 541 in Poth and followed it north toward Floresville. At approximately 2:45 a.m., the driver pulled over and activated the Mistubishi’s hazard lights, which prompted Sanchez to activate his overhead lights and pull over. One of the two occupants fled the vehicle and began to open fire on Sanchez, who returned fire and the two fled into the surrounding brush. No one was injured.

Personnel from DPS including several Texas Rangers, officers from the Floresville Pplice Department, the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, the Atascosa County Sheriff's Office, Texas Parks and Wildlife, the San Antonio Police Department, and the Poth Police Department responded to assist. The suspects were taken into custody just after 8 a.m.

Poth police Chief Lowell Hull said Sanchez has been placed on administrative leave and will receive counseling, which is consistent with departmental procedure.

Flores said Deckard is listed in critical condition in the San Antonio Military Medical Center.
